British actress cum model, Cara Delevingne, has opened up on how her childhood trauma caused her to indulge in drugs and alcohol at an early age before she managed to get herself clean and sober.
The actress made this known in a cover story for Vogue. Delevingne, who had a very public fall from grace in 2022, said her trauma comes from spending most of her childhood looking after her bipolar and heroin-addicted mother.
She revealed that her introduction to alcohol abuse came at the age of 7 while at a family wedding. “I woke up in my granny’s house in my bedroom with a hangover, in a bridesmaid’s dress.
“I’d gone around nailing glasses of Champagne,” said Delevingne. According to the actress, she was already on sleeping pills to manage her insomnia when she was ten years old.
She was also diagnosed with dyspraxia, a neurological disorder in the brain that results in life-long impaired motor, memory, judgment, processing and other cognitive skills, according to the Dyspraxia Foundation.
“This was the beginning of mental health issues and inadvertent self-harm,” she stated.
“Instead of taking the time to learn something new or do something new, I got very wrapped up in misery, wallowing and partying. It was a really sad time.”
Delevingne admitted that she would harm herself by hitting her head against a tree to try and knock herself out. She would scratch herself and because of that, doctors prescribed antipsychotic drugs but at her lowest point, she contemplated taking her own life.
“Money is not everything. You get to the point where you are like, ‘Oh, I’ve made money’, but I’m so deeply unhappy and alone,” Cara added.
