Another oil spillage have occur in Bodo community in Gokana LGA of Rivers State yesterday. According to an indigene at the area who spoke with N-press yesterday, said “Oil spill is a major challenge to the Ogoni people and their environment since oil was discovered in the area”.
He also said one of the challenges they used to have with companies operating in the area is, “rather than work with various communities in its operational bases, the company over the years, emphasizes its relationship with the government.
When asked about the possible cause of the spill in Bodo City yesterday, he said “the major cause is neglect and lack of regular maintenance of the pipelines and storage tanks.
He further stated that “most pipelines from the flow stations are absolutely more than 40 years old, making them subject to corrosion and leakage. So ageing of the pipelines caused the oil blowouts from the flow station.”
Another to source who spoke with N-press correspondent, he emphasized that “unlike in the developed world, Shell‘s operation in Ogoni in respect of environmental protection do not measure up to acceptable international standard. Instead, its operations and equipment are so outdated that they would not be permitted in other parts of the world”.
The result; oil spillage, reckless gas flaring and pipelines with little or no maintenance resulting in blow-out and pollution.
The cost of oil spills in Bodo City are considerable in both economic and ecological terms. One of the industries most affected by oil spills is fishing.
Major oil spills as in this case are frequently followed by the immediate suspension of commercial fishing, at least to prevent damage to the vessels and equipment but also to prevent the catch and sales of fish or shellfish that are contaminated.
The seepage runs into streams and sea which are the source of drinking water of the people as there is no pipeborne water in the area. What about plants and crops, oil flowed down like water in cassava farms around the homes. It is not a sight to behold
Worse yet, people had built their houses and are living in this affected areas.
