A heartbreaking incident unfolded in São Paulo, Brazil, as Jonathan Ribeiro, 31, lost his life while sharing a tender moment with his girlfriend on a sidewalk.
The couple was out walking their dog on Sunday when tragedy struck, and a speeding car mounted the sidewalk, hitting them both and dragging them approximately 30 feet.
Surveillance footage of the incident, revealed recently, captures the horrifying sequence as Ribeiro and his partner were pulled along the sidewalk before the car finally came to a halt.
Ribeiro was immediately rushed to Campo Limpo Municipal Hospital, but tragically succumbed to his injuries.
His girlfriend suffered injuries as well, including a fractured shoulder and bruises on her head and legs.
The 30-year-old driver, whose identity remains undisclosed, was apprehended at the scene and is now facing a manslaughter charge.
Law enforcement administered a breathalyzer test, which indicated that the driver had consumed alcohol, although not exceeding the legal limit.
The vehicle was also searched, leading to the discovery of drugs.
The driver, who claims to have no memory of the accident, was granted provisional release by a judge on the condition that he abides by several restrictions, including regular court appearances and refraining from certain activities.
