The mother of Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales has initiated a hunger strike in protest against what she perceives as an “inhuman hunt” targeting her son.
Rubiales, 46, faced significant backlash after he kissed forward Jenni Hermoso on the lips during Spain‘s Women’s World Cup final victory.
Angeles Bejar, Rubiales’ mother, has locked herself inside a church in Motril and announced her indefinite hunger strike as a response to the ongoing situation.
Hermoso, 33, claimed that the kiss, which took place during the presentation ceremony in Sydney on August 20, was not consensual.
Despite Rubiales’ refusal to resign, FIFA suspended him on Saturday.
Amid increasing scrutiny, Spain’s government has called for the suspension of Rubiales, a proposal that will be discussed at a meeting of Spain’s Sports Tribunal (TAD) on Monday.
