With a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa on Saturday, Roberto Firmino struck a stunning late equalizer to maintain Liverpool‘s limited chances of finishing in the top four of the Premier League.
In Liverpool’s final home game of the season, the Brazilian, who spent eight seasons with the Merseyside club, scored in the 89th minute to the pleasure of the crowd.
With one game left, Juergen Klopp’s team is in fifth position with 66 points, three points behind fourth-place Manchester United who have a game in hand. Villa, led by Unai Emery, are sixth with 58 points after 37 games.
After a sustained period of pressure, Jacob Ramsey gave Villa the lead in the 27th minute by scurrying to the back post and heading a cross from Douglas.
Five minutes earlier, when Villa was given a penalty, they had the opportunity to grab the lead, but Ollie Watkins’ attempt missed the target.
Cody Gakpo scored from close range for Liverpool early in the second half, but the goal was disallowed for offside following a protracted VAR review.
To qualify for the Champions League, Liverpool must win their final match at Southampton the following week and hope that Manchester United and Newcastle United lose their final two games.
