Nigeria beat Dominican Republic 2-1 in U-20 W’Cup opener

At the 2023 U-20 World Cup in Mendoza, Argentina, Nigeria’s Flying Eagles defeated the Dominican Republic with a comeback victory in their opening match of Group D. With a 2-1 victory against their opponents, the Flying Eagles took control of the group.

The Flying Eagles faced the Caribbean debutants in their opening group stage match after winning and drawing their pre-tournament friendly.

Nigeria had complete control of the game from the first whistle, but they were unable to produce quality openings or damage the Dominican defense.

When Inter Miami player Edison Azcona missed from the penalty spot in the 23rd minute against the flow of play after the VAR granted a penalty, the underdogs took the lead.

Jude Sunday, Ibrahim Muhammad, and Lawal Salim Fago put the Dominican defense under pressure, which caused the Flying Eagles to pick up the speed of the game. One minute after the half-hour mark, Guillermo De Pena headed a long throw-in from Nigeria’s captain Daniel Bameyi past his own goalkeeper to give Nigeria the equalizer.

The Dominican goalie had to make a lot of good stops as the first half ended with Nigeria leading.

Nigeria began the second half in the same way they left it, determined to exact revenge on their opponents. Shortly into the first half of the impressive Sunday, the Flying Eagles had the ball in the back of the net, but the assistant referee’s flag disallowed the goal.

Samson Lawal took advantage of a generous defensive play by the Flying Eagles in the 70th minute to score the game’s opening goal and put the Flying Eagles ahead for good.

The Dominican goalkeeper made a number of excellent stops to preserve a respectable score as Nigeria dominated the remaining minutes of the game.

With three points now under their belt, the Flying Eagles will play Italy on Wednesday.
