After scoring Napoli’s lone goal in their 1-0 victory over Fiorentina at the Diego Maradona stadium on Sunday, Nigerian international Victor Osimhen became the highest-scoring African in Serie A history.
As the victors celebrated their Scudetto victory in a carnival-like setting, Osimhen had one penalty saved before scoring another.
The 24-year-old scored his 47th league goal overall and 23rd this season after joining the team in 2020.
Osimhen scored his first penalty-kick goal, his 47th in Serie A.
With his game-winning goal, the Napoli striker made Italian top-flight history by outscoring Weah (46 goals) to become the highest-scoring African player ever.
With his huge goal against Udinese on Thursday, the Super Eagles forward tied Weah’s record for the most African goals scored in Serie A and helped Napoli win their first Serie A championship in more than three decades.
At the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, Luciano Spalletti’s team was greeted by an ecstatic audience after ending a 33-year wait to win Serie A on Thursday.
After having a second-half penalty saved by Pietro Terracciano, Osimhen believed he had blown the Partenopei’s best opportunity to win. However, a foul on Khvicha Kvaratskhelia provided him with the opportunity to make amends.
Napoli’s long-awaited Scudetto celebration was capped with three points as the Serie A’s leading scorer scored at the second attempt.
