Salernitana extends SA unbeaten run with a 2-2 draw with Bologna

A brace of assists from Georgios Kyriakopoulos saw Bologna come from behind twice at the Stadio Arechi to earn a point, though it looks unlikely to be of much use in their hunt for European football. Meanwhile, Salernitana extended their Serie A (SA) unbeaten run to four games, provisionally going eight points clear of the nearest relegation spot.

A frantic start to the game saw both sides fight without any inhibitions, and in the space of just 15 minutes, the hosts struck first blood via Lorenzo Pirola’s superb header from a corner delivery, before Lewis Ferguson bravely launched himself at an inch-perfect cross and guided the ball into the bottom corner to level the score.

The Rossoblù were then dealt a blow, however, as wingback Andrea Cambiaso was taken off due to an injury.

The visitors didn’t let the Juventus loanee’s substitution affect them though, and they forced Il Granata to ponder their tactical approach by keeping them on their toes with constant pressing.

But neither side proved capable of reshaping the scoreline as HT approached, with the game heading for a third straight 1-1 H2H draw and looking ever more likely to extend Salernitana’s wait for a first home victory of the season against any side starting the round 10th or better.

Bologna preserved their momentum after the break, but there was another twist, as Boulaye Dia doubled his side’s lead via a deflected finish to get the Stadio Arechi singing again. Just as before, however, it didn’t take the visitors long to hit back.

Bologna’s Greek connection did the job this time, as Charalampos Lykogiannis rose high to meet yet another Georgios Kyriakopoulos corner delivery and lodged a bullet header into the top-left corner to stun their hosts once more.

Thiago Motta will be pleased with the comeback, but not entirely satisfied with his side’s inability to muster a win, which would have seen them close the gap to the top-six.

Bologna have now drawn three in a row for the first time since September 2021, whereas Salernitana continue their impressive form under new coach Paulo Sousa with a fourth successive unbeaten match.
